As revealed in <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/6_pL1o31LwI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a <em>SoundStage! Shorts<\/em> video<\/a> featuring president Josh Clark, every Rockport speaker is thoroughly checked before leaving their shop to ensure that its finish is flawless; its acoustical output is listened to and measured, and its crossover is tweaked, until its sound duplicates, as closely as possible, the sound of that model\u2019s prototype. Rockport is not a high-volume manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p>Last December, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soundstageultra.com\/index.php\/equipment-menu\/917-rockport-technologies-avior-ii-loudspeakers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeff Fritz reviewed the Avior II<\/a> for <em>SoundStage! Ultra<\/em>. Although, at $38,500\/pair USD, it\u2019s Rockport\u2019s second-least-expensive loudspeaker, the Avior II\u2019s sound quality ranks high &#8212; Jeff thought it \u201ceasily one of the finest loudspeakers I\u2019ve heard in the last five years.\u201d The Avior II measures 46.5\u201dH x 15\u201dW x 24.5\u201dD, including the base; it weighs a hefty 220 pounds; and its enclosure is made of constrained-layer-damped MDF. The curved side panels vary in thickness, the top panel slopes slightly downward toward the front, and the front and rear panels are raked back. On the rear are a port and binding posts, and the front baffle is 6\u201d thick, with generously chamfered edges that taper outward from bottom to top, to minimize diffraction effects. The Avior II is finished in high-gloss black paint (custom colors are available for an upcharge).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_2up_v2.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4576\" src=\"https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_2up_v2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"765\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_2up_v2.jpg 765w, https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_2up_v2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_2up_v2-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/a>Mounted on that massive front baffle are four drivers in a three-way configuration: a 1\u201d beryllium-dome tweeter seated in a Rockport-designed waveguide (the latter is the biggest difference between the II and the original Avior), a 6\u201d midrange, and two 9\u201d woofers. The tweeter is made by Scan-Speak, but the midrange and woofers, which have cones comprising two layers of carbon-fiber fabric sandwiching a Rohacell core, are bespoke Rockport designs. Rockport specifies the Avior II\u2019s frequency response as 25Hz-30kHz, -3dB, its sensitivity as 89.5dB\/2.83V\/m, and its nominal impedance as 4 ohms.<\/p>\n<p>In his review, Jeff said that Rockport\u2019s founder and chief designer, Andy Payor, <em>\u201clikes real bass &#8212; solid, punchy lows that listeners can feel throughout their bodies &#8212; and dislikes grating highs that can at first sound like increased detail, but are actually excess treble output.\u201d<\/em> The Avior II reflected this taste, Jeff found: <em>\u201cIt had deep, full-bodied bass that most speakers of similar size can\u2019t match. It also had a high-frequency balance that I never tired of &#8212; listening fatigue was never part of my Avior II experience.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_detail1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4578\" src=\"https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_detail1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"765\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_detail1.jpg 765w, https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_detail1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_detail1-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/a>Playing \u201cMarseille,\u201d from Ahmad Jamal\u2019s <em>Ballades<\/em> (24-bit\/96kHz FLAC, Jazz Village\/Qobuz), Jeff heard the following:<\/p>\n<p><em>[T]he weight of Jamal\u2019s left-hand notes was fully re-created by the Avior IIs, presenting in my room a convincing aural facsimile of an actual piano.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. but it\u2019s nowhere near the full story. At about 2:12 into this track, James Cammack\u2019s subtle double-bass playing &#8212; this is a duo album &#8212; was fully distinguished from Jamal\u2019s left-hand notes, as if an aural microscope had been trained on the two instruments. Through the Avior IIs, bass was never merely bass &#8212; their impressive delineation of low-end notes greatly added to my enjoyment of \u201cMarseille.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To test the Avior II\u2019s tonal balance and ability to reveal musical details, Jeff first played \u201cRiver Lea,\u201d from Adele\u2019s <em>25<\/em> (16\/44.1 FLAC, XL\/Columbia\/Qobuz): <em>\u201cI heard deeper into the electronic reverb added to her voice, and her inhalations before vocalizing, than I\u2019ve been able to with most other speakers, regardless of cost. The midband in \u2018River Lea\u2019 was basically neutral in tonality, but the dense midbass and info-packed lower midrange laid bare the slightly husky quality of Adele\u2019s almost universally recognized voice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Listening to Sara Watkins\u2019s <em>Sun Midnight Sun<\/em> (16\/44.1 FLAC, Nonesuch\/Qobuz), he noted that <em>\u201cher fiddle sounded rosiny, and her voice in \u2018When It Pleases You\u2019 was clear and tinged with emotion.\u201d Jeff could also clearly hear that the recording \u201clacks wide dynamic range,\u201d<\/em> and pointed out that it <em>\u201ccan sound too processed through some speakers because of their inability to reveal microdetail &#8212; sounds that should be distinguished from each other are instead mushed together. But I found that if a recording contains a detail, I heard it through the Avior IIs.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_binding.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4580\" src=\"https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_binding.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"765\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_binding.jpg 765w, https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_binding-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_binding-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_binding-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/melodysvision.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/202007_rockport_binding-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/a>Jeff summed up his impressions of the Avior II:<\/p>\n<p><em>It combines an expertly voiced tonal balance that I can\u2019t imagine anyone disliking with the ability to resolve the finest details in recordings, from the top to the very bottom of the audioband. In fact, until you hear these speakers, you very well may never have heard genuine bass detail.
